Horses with all their grandeur, beauty and elegance, also have very distinct and individual personalities. Developing a rapport with these emotionally complex animals is the first step I take when it comes to equestrian photography. It takes time to bring out their playfulness, and often to make them feel safe I stand with the horses, petting them, talking to them, trying my best to instill confidence and show my appreciation of them. Since the language barrier is a bit tricky, I try hard to put the horse(s) at ease using different strategies before even picking up my camera. And in the end with a little luck, I may even be able to extract a smile here or there…
